Tanzanian bongo flavour artist Baltazary Romani, popularly known as Dayo, has shed light on the surprising circumstances that led to his musical collaboration with fellow artist Ibraah.
Speaking on Radio 47’s Baze 47 show hosted by Manucho, Dayo revealed that what initially began as a fan-fueled rivalry turned into a productive partnership that gave birth to the hit song “Nipo Single.”
According to Dayo, tensions flared after Ibraah jokingly denied knowing him during a media interview, which was taken the wrong way by fans and quickly gained attraction online.
“Fans were asking, ‘Do you know Dayo?’” Dayo recalled during the interview.
“People took it differently, and it started trending. I looked at it from a business perspective, reached out to Ibraah’s team, and we planned and released the song.”
The artist also took the opportunity to express gratitude to his Kenyan fans for their overwhelming support, particularly highlighting the impact of his hit single “Huu Mwaka” featuring Rayvanny.
“Kenya is home, and I get so much support here. I can say it’s because of the love and unity we have,” said Dayo.
Reflecting on the contrasting regulatory landscapes of the Kenyan and Tanzanian music industries, Dayo noted that while Tanzania’s BASATA (Baraza la Sanaa la Taifa) monitors content, it is not as restrictive as many believe.
“It’s not mandatory to pass your song through BASATA before release, but if it has issues, BASATA will come after you,” he explained.
He added that “Huu Mwaka” played a major role in advancing his music career and opening doors, including his current tour in Kenya.
“I believe that 70% of what I sang in that song has come to pass. Today I’m here for my Kenya tour, which in one way was made possible by that song,” said Dayo.
In addition, Dayo praised Kenyan artist Willy Paul, who once made headlines for his clash with Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz.
“Up to now, Willy Paul is a big artist in Tanzania. I respect him, and there are some of his songs that I really like,” he said.
With an expanding fan base across East Africa and a string of hits under his belt, Dayo continues to cement his position as one of the region’s most promising bongo flavour stars.
