The Director of Public Prosecutions DPP has preferred murder charges DPP against police officer Klinzy Masinde Baraza over the shooting of mask vendor Boniface Kariuki during the June 17 protests.
His co-suspect, Duncan Kiprono, has however been set free and his case closed over insufficient grounds to continue detaining him in connection with the shooting of Kariuki.
During the hearing of the case on Thursday July 10 a trial Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi gave a the go ahead for Barasa who was captured on camera shooting Kariuki to take plea for murder.
Kariuki was shot at a close range an incident that was captured on camera. Kariuki whose brain was 80 % damaged following the shooting was pronounced dead last week at the Kenyatta National Hospital KNH where he spent 2 weeks at the Intensive Care Unit receiving treatment.

A requiem mass for Kariuki, was held Wednesday 9 July at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi and was attended by family, friends, and relatives.
Later in the evening a candlelight vigil was held Wednesday at the spot where he was shot, a symbolic act of remembrance.
Kariuki will be laid to rest on Friday July 11, at his family home in Kangema, Murang’a County.
