Popular content creator and professional MC, Erick Obuya widely known as MC Exodus, has opened up about his painful past, recounting a time when he lived inside a toilet at Winners Chapel along Mombasa Road, Nairobi for three months.
In an interview on Radio 47’s Breakfast Show hosted by Alex Mwakideu and Emmanuel Mwashumbe, the actor and comedian shared how his journey to salvation and stardom began.
“I had nowhere to go when I joined the church, so I hid inside with my small bag,” MC Exodus recalled. “At the time, there were many youth programs, so I would wake up early and go into the church, and when evening came around 4 pm I would go into the toilet and sleep.”
When asked by Mwakideu whether the toilet was in use, Exodus responded with a laugh, “Our toilet was big and during weekdays it wasn’t used. I approached our leader, and he gave me the key, so even the cleaning staff didn’t disturb me.”
Despite trying to remain hidden, his living situation was eventually discovered by church security.
“There was a time around 1am I was caught and told to stand by the CCTV,” he explained. “I had to call the pastor and tell him I had nowhere to go and knew no one in Nairobi. I said, ‘If you throw me out, I will die out there.’ The pastor told them to let me stay, saying I was a young man who helped the church a lot.”
Following that encounter, he was given a more decent sleeping area within the church grounds.
“After that, I was given a place where mattresses and church cleaning basins were kept, and I was given the key but it was still within the large toilet building,” he shared.
MC Exodus story has touched many of his over 1 million followers on the X platform. His rapid rise to fame has also drawn comparisons to other popular content creators. However, Exodus dismissed claims of copying, stating that his unique style comes from a personal struggle.
“Since I was young, I had hearing troubles. Sometimes when someone talks to me, I have to say ‘eh?’ So I used that as an advantage in my content,” he explained.
His entertainment journey began in 2016 on Churchill Comedy, and he fully ventured into content creation in 2020. Before all this, MC Exodus had come to Nairobi as a househelp but the job ended abruptly, forcing him into survival mode.
Now a saved Christian and respected entertainer, MC Exodus who will turn 30 years soon, credits his faith and resilience for turning his pain into purpose.
