Clinical officers have suspended their planned strike in Machakos County after signing an agreement with the county government on July 11, 2025.

The deal was reached during a late evening meeting chaired by County Secretary Dr. Ndambuki Muya. It includes the implementation of Career Progression Guidelines; covering promotions, re-designations, and resolving job stagnation.

Speaking after the meeting Kenya Union of Clinical Officers Secretary General, George Gibore, commended the Governor of Machakos County Wavinya Ndeti, for agreeing to meet with them in order to reach an agreement. Gibore said they have signed two agreements that he expects they will be implemented without fail.

”Gavana heko kwa kukubaliana na sisi kwamba maafisa wetu wapate kupandishwa ngazi kazini kulingana na kanuni zao za utendakazi,” said Gibore

Gibore immediately announced the suspension of the strike arguing all members to report to work today Saturday as usual.

He asked governor Wavinya to make sure all the agreements signed are implemented saying they will present them to court to make them more binding. ”Ile tumetia saini leo tutapeleka kortini hivyo, itakuwa kama agizo la mahakama na tunataka kuona maafikiano hayo yanatekelezwa kikamilifu,” Gibore said.

On his part, Chairperson of the National Union of Clinical officers Peterson Wachira National said they agreed to give the county government time considering the problems have been there from previous administrations, ”we cannot say it is something that has started with the current governor….when you talk of stagnation, it is something that has been there for a long period and the governor has been here for only two years.”he said.

Machakos becomes the first county in Kenya to roll out these guidelines, a key milestone in health workforce reform.

Dr. Muya called the agreement a major boost for the health sector and a reflection of Governor Wavinya’s commitment to improving healthcare services.
