Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi stormed to his third victory of the season at the Herculis Diamond League in Monaco, clocking a world-leading and meet record time of 1:41.44. American Josh Hoey finished second in 1:42.01, just 0.019 seconds ahead of Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati. Defending world champion Marco Arop of Canada trailed in fifth. The win pushes Wanyonyi’s lead in the Diamond League standings to 30 points.

In the 3000m steeplechase, Kenya’s World U20 champion Edmund Serem held onto his lead in the standings with 24 points, despite finishing third in a personal best of 8:04.00. Morocco’s Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali took the win in 8:03.18, followed closely by Japan’s Ruyji Miura (8:03.43). Olympic silver medallist Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya placed 12th.

In the men’s 5000m, former World silver medallist Jacob Krop of Kenya finished ninth, as Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha claimed victory in 12:49.46. France’s Jimmy Gressier and Bahrain’s Birhanu Balew came in second and third.

Kenya’s Nelly Chepchirchir starred in the women’s 1000m, winning in a personal best of 2:29.77. However, world 800m champion Mary Moraa struggled, finishing 12th.

In the sprints, reigning world champion Noah Lyles of the USA edged Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo of Botswana in the 200m, winning in 19.88 seconds to Tebogo’s 19.97.

Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia clinched the women’s 100m title in 10.79 seconds. She was followed by Jacious Sears (USA) in 11.02 and New Zealand’s Joe Hobbs in 11.12.

Meanwhile, off the track, the NFL announced it will host youth championships in Kenya and Ghana, marking a growing global footprint for American football.

Back in the ring, Kenya’s ‘Hit-Squad’ impressed at the Africa Boxing Championship, qualifying four boxers to the semifinals, while Libya’s Al Ahli Tripoli were crowned 2025 Basketball Africa League (BAL) champions.

The Diamond League now moves to London next Saturday for the next round of thrilling action.
