Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, is dead at 82. Buhari led Nigeria twice as a military head of state and a democratic president.
In an announcement by the Press Secretary, Buhari died in London on Sunday afternoon, where he was receiving medical treatment.
The former military ruler made history in 2015 when he became the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election.
Buhari was re-elected in 2019 for another four-year term; he led until 2023, when he was succeeded by Bola Tinubu, also from the All Progressives Congress.
Buhari, who came from Nigeria’s mostly Muslim north, promised to stop the violence and fight corruption in Nigeria, one of Africa’s biggest economies and oil producers.
But by the time he left office eight years later, many people were disappointed. Security had worsened, more Nigerians had died due to violence, and corruption had spread further in the government.
Before becoming president Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State (1983–1985), Minister of Petroleum (1976–1978), and Governor of Borno State in 1976.
Buhari was born to a Muslim family on 17 December 1942, in Duara, Katsina State, Nigeria.
