Amid the ongoing war with Russia, Ukraine celebrates its Statehood Day on July 15, honoring the legacy of Kyivan Rus’ and the enduring spirit of its people through centuries of struggle.
In a heartfelt address, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed deep gratitude to the millions of Ukrainians who have shaped the nation’s history, emphasizing the strong bond that connects past and present generations.
“This day is about connection, about all stages of our state-building and what unites dozens of generations those who lived here a thousand years ago, and those who live now. A bridge through time, which stands on three unshakeable pillars: Ukrainians were here, Ukrainians are here, Ukrainians will be here.” Zelensky said.
The President also addressed the ongoing Russian invasion, stressing that Ukraine’s resolve remains unyielding despite the challenges.
“For centuries, both in Rus’ and in Sich, in all eras, no matter what enemy and from what side came, nothing hostile takes root on this land,” Zelensky affirmed.
The President also insisted Ukraine will stand firm in defending itself against Russian aggression.
“We are just people who defend our home, our home, and we cannot do otherwise, because we do not want otherwise. We do not want Russia to be here. That’s the whole truth.”
In the wake of these remarks, U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled a ramping up of support for Ukraine, after six months of unsuccessful talks with President Vladimir Putin to end the war.
The US President claimed that Putin was becoming increasingly difficult to deal with, hence his decision of backing Ukraine’s defense against Russia, underscoring the urgency of continued assistance as Kyiv faces ongoing aggression.
