Congo Brazzaville has been drafted in to replace Sudan in the upcoming CECAFA Four Nations tournament, set for July 21–27 at the Karatu Stadium in Tanzania’s Arusha region.
The tournament will now feature hosts Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and guest side Congo Brazzaville. It will adopt a round-robin format, where each team plays the others once, and the team with the most points at the end will be crowned champions.
Harambee Stars will open their campaign against Uganda Cranes on July 21, while hosts Tanzania take on Congo Brazzaville later the same day. On Match Day 2, set for July 24, Congo Brazzaville will face Uganda, before Kenya meets Tanzania. The tournament will conclude on July 27, with Kenya facing Congo Brazzaville and Uganda playing Tanzania.
All four teams will field squads composed of home-based players as they prepare for the CHAN tournament, to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania from August 2–30, 2025.
Auka John Gecheo, the Executive Director of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) explained that the tournament serves as a vital warm-up for CHAN.
“The primary objective of this competition is to offer our Zonal teams a valuable platform to prepare adequately ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for August 2025,” he stated.
Sudan, another CECAFA team that will feature in the CHAN tournament, requested to skip the event to concentrate on the local league which kicked off recently.
