The Kahawa Law Court on Monday July 21, 2025 freed activist Boniface Mwangi on a bond of Ksh1 million after pleading not guilty to two charges related to unlawful possession of ammunition and three teargas canisters.

This was after prosecution dropped terrorism charges against the human rights activist, following his arrest on Saturday.

The activist was accused of being in possession of three teargas canisters and one round of ammunition.

“On July 19, 2025, at Mageuzi Hub in Nairobi County within the Republic of Kenya, you were found in possession of noxious substances, to wit, three teargas canisters without lawful authority,” count one reads.

“On July 19, 2025, at Mageuzi Hub in Nairobi County within the Republic of Kenya, you were found in possession of one round of 7.62×21mm blank ammunition without lawful authority,” the sheet reads.

His defence lawyers led by Martha Karua filed an application to have the case transferred to Milimani Law Courts since the State failed to charge him with terrorism offences.

The case will be mentioned on August 19,2025 for pretrial directions.

On Saturday, July 19, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) raided his home in Lukenya, Machakos County and arrested him for questioning in connection with facilitating terrorism activities during the June 25, 2025, protests.

DCI claimed that it had recovered several items, including a 7.62mm blank round, and two unused teargas canisters.

Other items listed in the DCI reports were nine assorted external hard drives, two laptops, company seals for two companies, a company stamp, six cheque books, and copies of stamp duty documents.
