Officers from the Kisumu Central Police Station, acting on a tip-off from vigilant members of the public, successfully conducted an operation that led to the discovery and destruction of a large quantity of illicit alcohol.
According to National Police Service statement, the operation took place in a local thicket, uncovering a concealed stash of illegal brews. The haul included 10 jerricans, each containing 20 litres, 2 drums, each with 200 litres of Kangara, and 5 litres of Chang’aa.
“During the operation, officers uncovered a concealed stash hidden within a local thicket. The haul included 10 jerricans (20 litres each), 2 drums (200 litres each) of Kangara and 5 litres of Chang’aa,” the National Police Service (NPS) said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the thicket was being used as a temporary storage site for the Kangara before it was transported for further distillation.
One suspect, believed to be the owner of the illicit consignment, was arrested at the scene and is expected to be arraigned in court as investigations into the matter continue.
This operation is part of a broader effort by local authorities to clamp down on illegal alcohol production and distribution, which has become a significant concern in many parts of Kenya due to its adverse health and social effects.
