Fifty-seven followers of the Melkio St. Joseph Mission Messiah of Africa Church in Migori, are set to spend the next 30 days in custody after a Rongo court issued detention orders to facilitate ongoing investigations.
Resident Magistrate Susan Mutava, presiding over the case, directed that the suspects be held at nine various police stations across Migori County. The magistrate emphasized that the remand period will give authorities adequate time to complete investigations into the church’s activities.
On Thursday afternoon, a police truck was seen at Rongo Police Station being prepared to transport the suspects to the designated facilities.
The followers whom entered the truck jumping, singing while shouting Halleluyah were escorted under tight security.
The exact nature of the allegations remains unclear, but sources close to the investigation suggest that the group may be linked to unlawful practices, including potential violations of public safety and religious regulations.
Migori County Police Commander has confirmed that the operation was coordinated following credible intelligence reports. “We are treating this matter with the seriousness it deserves,” the commander said, noting that the investigation will cover multiple aspects of the church’s operations and leadership structure.
The detainment has sparked debate within the local community, with some defending the church’s freedom of worship, while others have raised concerns over its teachings and practices.
The case will be mentioned in court after the lapse of the 30 day period, pending the outcome of investigations.
