Homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI are closing in on the suspect behind the brutal murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Were, who was gunned down on Wednesday evening, April 30.
The legislator was assassinated in cold blood along Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout. According to preliminary reports, he was shot four times by suspected assailants who had been trailing him from the Nairobi CBD.
Investigations have revealed a carefully executed hit, with detectives relying on crucial CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts from Were’s driver and bodyguard to trace the killer’s steps.
On Thursday, detectives extended their probe to the National Assembly, where the late Kasipul MP Charles Were had spent most of his day attending to parliamentary duties.
Were reportedly left Parliament Buildings at around 7 p.m., accompanied by his security team, before heading toward City Hall Way and turning onto Wabera Street. While on Wabera, his bodyguard briefly left the car to deposit Ksh 20,000 at a nearby M-Pesa shop.
CCTV footage from the area showed a hooded man carrying a bag and closely monitoring the MP’s vehicle the same individual believed to have followed Were’s car for several kilometers.
To avoid congestion on Kenyatta Avenue, the driver rerouted through Ralph Bunche Road, eventually connecting to Argwings Kodhek and later Valley Road. It was there, while stuck in traffic, that tragedy struck.
The chilling footage shows the hooded suspect arriving on a motorcycle. He disembarked, walked around Were’s car, and opened fire at close range. The first bullet shattered the window, with three more hitting the MP in the hand and chest.
Despite efforts by the bodyguard to pursue the fleeing gunman, the suspect vanished. The critically injured MP was rushed to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
As detectives intensify their probe, the focus now turns to unmasking the face behind the hood the prime suspect in a murder that has shocked the nation and left the political community in mourning.
Meanwhile the family of the late Were is blaming the security department on what it called inaction despite him reporting about threats that he had been receiving.
