Chaos erupted Thursday morning during the official launch of Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party along Musa Gitau Road in Lavington, Nairobi.
The event had been proceeding smoothly, with Gachagua delivering his speech and unveiling the names of party officials, until a group of rowdy youth stormed the venue in what appeared to be a calculated attempt to disrupt the function. The commotion briefly brought the gathering to a halt as attendees scrambled for safety.
Police officers who were stationed at the venue quickly sprang into action, lobbing tear gas to disperse the crowd.
In the chaos that followed, some of the intruders were reportedly cornered and assaulted, while party officials were swiftly escorted away to ensure their safety. Gachagua’s convoy was also forced to make a temporary stop as officers worked to bring the situation under control. The tension lasted for about five minutes before normalcy was restored.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
The former DP said the party aims to restore dignity to citizens and offer a platform that prioritizes the needs of ordinary Kenyans.
