A 31-year-old man has been arrested in Mangelete village, Makueni County, for allegedly murdering his 76-year-old father, Peter Kailu Nzango, and attempting to disguise the killing as a suicide.
The incident, which occurred on May 20, reportedly stemmed from a dispute between the two over the felling of trees on the deceased’s land. According to police and witness accounts, the suspect is said to have assaulted his father, strangled him, then tied a rope around his neck and dragged the body to a nearby bush. He allegedly hanged the body from a low tree branch to give the impression that the elderly man had taken his own life.
Investigators said the body bore visible bruises on the legs, raising suspicion about the nature of the death. The suspect was traced and arrested shortly after the incident. The body was moved to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination and further investigations.
Police say the matter is being treated as a premeditated act of murder rooted in a land-related family conflict.
