The High Court has issued a conservatory order temporarily suspending the expulsion of nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Justice Lawrence Mugambi granted the order following a Notice of Motion filed by Orwoba under a certificate of urgency on May 20, 2025. In the application, Orwoba challenged the decision by the UDA Party Disciplinary Committee dated May 16, 2025, which expelled her from the party and, by extension, her position as a nominated senator.

The court has directed that the disciplinary action be suspended pending the hearing and determination of the matter. The judge further directed that the case be mentioned for further directions on June 3, 2025.

The court also issued a notice warning that any disobedience of the order will attract legal consequences.

This development temporarily shields Senator Orwoba from losing her seat, which is tied to her party membership under the UDA.

This comes a few hours after the Senate Speaker, Amason Kingi, declared the seat vacant.

In a Gazette Notice dated May 21, 2025, the Speaker confirmed the vacancy under Article 101(2) of the Constitution.

UDA expelled Orwoba over disciplinary breaches and disloyalty, citing her association with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i. The UDA party had forwarded Consolata Wabwire Wakwabubi’s name to replace her.
