Eight people, including a pregnant woman and seven members of the same family, have died following a fire incident in Makina, Kibra.

The fire that broke out on Saturday, May 24 morning is said to have affected approximately 40 households.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, the fire has since been contained by the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade.

“Together with Eagle Hospital, we have attended to 20 people injured in a fire incident that occurred earlier this morning in Makina, Kibera,” Kenya Red Cross says.

Area Member of Parliament, Peter Orero, says that the fire has killed six persons.

In a statement on his official social media accounts, Kibra MP Peter Orero confirmed the incident, saying six others suffered serious burns and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

“One man, two women, and three children sustained serious burns and injuries and have been rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they fight to recover,” he stated.

Orero said he has deployed a rescue team to work with emergency services to ensure those affected receive immediate assistance, including medical care and counselling.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us in Kibra.
