The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has launched a nationwide crackdown targeting illegal pharmaceutical activities in a bid to safeguard public health and uphold professional standards in the sector.

Speaking during an inspection tour in Murang’a, Head of the Central Region at PPB, Dr. James Gathogo, emphasized the Board’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that all pharmaceutical outlets are run by qualified professionals.

The operation, being conducted with the support of the National Police Service, aims to eliminate unlicensed pharmacies and rogue practices that put patients at risk.

“This crackdown is about protecting Kenyans from unsafe medicines and unqualified service providers,” said Dr. Gathogo, adding that self-medication and the misuse of prescription drugs continue to pose serious public health risks.

He urged Kenyans to seek pharmaceutical services only from licensed facilities and warned against the dangers of self-medication, which could lead to harmful side effects, complications, or drug dependency.

Dr. Gathogo also called on players in the pharmaceutical sector to uphold ethical standards, comply with regulations, and embrace self-regulation to maintain public trust.

The Board has vowed to continue the crackdown until all non-compliant operators are dealt with, reaffirming its resolve to sanitize the sector and enhance public safety.
