The National Transport and Safety Authority’s (NTSA) Director for Road Safety, Dr Andrew Kiplagat has emphasized the need for training programs for boda-boda operators. Kiplagat says many accidents involving boda-boda operator are as a result of lack of awareness on proper road usage.
“The regulations which have been in place dating back to 2015 gives us guidelines on what we need to do so that we can reduce the possibility of fatalities,” said Kiplagat.
The Director also encouraged bodaboda operators who have in the recent past disregarded traffic laws and regulations like sticking to lanes, avoiding wrong-side overtaking, and limiting passenger capacity while also underscoring the need to go through driving schools.
“We need to go to driving schools, spend time there while we are taught safety practices and usage of our roads to avoid road accidents,” Kiplagat emphasized.
Kiplagat was addressing the operators during a road safety sensitization forum in Nyandarua county as part of NTSA’s broader sensitization initiative.
Other security security officials who accompanied the Director echoed his statement emphasizing the need for collaboration between the community, road users and security agencies in implementation of these road safety practices.
Meanwhile, NTSA’s 2024 report named boda-boda riders and pedestrians among the leading victims of road accidents during that year in Kenya hence necessitating urgent interventions to prevent more casualties.
