‎Portugal have defeated Spain, the reigning European champions in a historic first all-Iberian UEFA nations leagues final to clinch a second UEFA Nations League title after they won the 2019 inaugural edition.

‎The Roberto Martinez side had to fight back twice from a goal down to force Spain into extra time penalties without their talisman Cristiano Ronaldo who was forced off injured in the 88th minute and his place taken by Paris Saint Germain forward Goncalo Ramos.

After dominating early proceedings, Arsenal bound Martin Zubimendi opened the scoring in the 21st minute after initiating a quick counter attack that resulted in him finishing off a wonderful team move. 5 minutes later Nuno Mendes leveled the scores after receiving a short pass from Pedro Neto.

Spain regained the lead on stroke of halftime through Mikel Oyarzabal after a Portugal defence mix up before Cristiano Ronaldo lashed onto Nuno Mendes cross to finish from close range in the 61st minute scoring his 9th goal of the tournament adding to his already illustrious goal scoring record.

Portugal’s bench proved decisive, especially the introduction of Rafael Leão in the 74th minute. The AC Milan winger terrorized the Spanish backline on both flanks, injecting pace and creativity as Portugal pushed for a winner.

‎In a match filled with quality, drama, and resilience, Roberto Martinez’s side showcased character and quality, they were not intimidated by pre match favourites Spain.

The decisive moment however came in post match penalties when Alvaro Morata’s spot kick was saved by Diogo Cost to deny Spain a second UEFA nations league trophy.

‎ While the defeat is a setback for Luis de la Fuente’s men, they remain among the favorites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The loss may also dampen teenage sensation Lamine Yamal’s hopes of pushing for the Ballon d’Or, despite his standout performances throughout the tournament.
