A 9-year-old girl who was violently dragged out of class for beading, at Nairimirimo Primary School near Naimaralal in Samburu County has been rescued and is now under the care of the Children’s Office in Samburu East.

The young girl, who was targeted for beading a deeply harmful cultural practice that is linked to child sexual abuse. Beading is a cultural practice mainly among the Maasai Community which means; a girl is marked for sexual relations especially by Morans that necessarily do not lead to marriage.

The victim is said to be traumatised but is safe as efforts continue to support her recovery and future.

Samburu West Member of Parliament Naisula Lesuuda has condemned the incident sharing a video where a girl was seen being pulled out of class by morans and brutally assaulted.

According to the MP, one girl was beaten while others were forcefully removed from school during the attack. Shockingly, the incident had gone largely unreported until a disturbing video began circulating on social media.

“My attention has been drawn to a deeply troubling video and reports from Nairimirimo Primary School where a young girl was violently pulled out of class by morans for beading; beading is abuse, not culture. We must end it now.” Naisula stated

The MP thanked all stakeholders who acted swiftly to rescue the girl and emphasized the need for accountability. “While her rescue is a great relief, I have made it clear that the perpetrators must face the full force of the law. Justice must not only be done but also serve as a firm deterrent, this must never happen again,” she said.

Lesuuda has called for immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved, as well as urgent intervention to ensure the safety of all girls in the region. “Girls are not property no Kenyan school in the 21st century should be a place where such abuses take place.” she stated.

The MP has pledged to support the rescued girl’s education through the Naisula Lesuuda Peace Foundation, which aids bright but vulnerable children.
