South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) led by Julius Sello Malema have condemned the Kenyan government for what they describe as “brutal repression” of peaceful protesters and “escalating authoritarianism” under the current administration.
EEF’s remarks come after the Independent Policing and Oversight Authority confirmed 8 deaths and at least 207 injuries many from gunshot wounds during the June 25th protests.
“The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) condemns, in the strongest terms, the brutal repression of peaceful protesters, the censorship of independent media, and the escalating authoritarianism of the regime led by President William Ruto in Kenya,” EFF’s statement partly read.
The EFF hailed the youth for their bravery and standing up to defend their rights amid economic challenges, saying, “This is a generation that refuses to bow, refuses to be silenced, what began as a rejection of economic justice has grown into a widespread demand for an end to state corruption, police brutality and impunity.”
EEF also criticized Communication Authority of Kenya’s move to ban media houses from live coverage of the protests terming it a violation of freedom of expression and media independence.
“This act of media censorship revealed the government’s true intent: to control the narrative, hide its crimes, and rule by fear,” the EFF said.
Malema who supported Kenyan Gen Zs during last year’s anti-finance bill protests, has declared his party’s solidarity with the Kenyan youths while urging President William Ruto implement reforms that will meet demands of the protestors.
“The world is watching, and Africa is watching,” the EFF concluded.
