Radio 47, operating under Cape Media Ltd Kenya, has earned international recognition for pioneering Africa’s first fully IP-based broadcast facility, a landmark achievement that positions the station at the forefront of modern broadcasting both on the continent and globally.
The station’s cutting-edge infrastructure, built with advanced IP broadcast technology, is hailed as the most sophisticated in Africa and among the most advanced worldwide. It features full automation, seamless visual radio integration, scalable remote production capabilities, and a future-proof digital ecosystem. This innovation, powered by Lawo and implemented by MediaCity Ads Ltd, is the first of its kind in Africa and is now studied as a model of next-generation broadcasting.
“We didn’t just build a station. We created a platform that inspires broadcasters across the world, we’re ensuring Africa’s achievements are recognized globally.” Said Prof. Simon Gicharu, Chairman of Cape Media Ltd.
Geoffrey Mung’ou, Head of Radio at Cape Media Ltd, added: “We’ve proven that Africa can set the pace, not just follow. Through our platforms, we’ve showcased the power of African engineering and the limitless possibilities of broadcast technology.”

The station’s journey, meticulously documented from inception, has turned Radio 47 into a continental pacesetter and a global case study for media innovation.

We set out to challenge global standards and we have succeeded. Africa is no longer catching up; we’re setting the trends.” He said.

Fred Martin Kiwalabye, Project Lead and Engineering Consultant, emphasized the importance of sharing the journey. He said, “we’ve been intentional in documenting this journey, not for ego, but for impact. This is a blueprint for the next generation of broadcasters in Africa and around the world.”
The facility’s success is attributed not only to its advanced technology but also to narrative leadership, showing the world what African innovation can achieve. Radio 47 collaborated with a global lineup of technology partners, including Lawo AG, MultiCam Systems, AVT Audio Video Technologies, Ravenna, Winmedia, Voceware, Genelec, AETA systems, PTZ Optics, Telos Alliance, Optisigns, and more.

According to Wayne Wafula, Digital Lead at Cape Media Ltd, “the fully automated hybrid IP infrastructure has transformed our digital growth. With modernized workflows and seamless livestream integration, we’ve hit over 200 million monthly views, significantly boosting engagement and monetisation.” He stated.
Launched just two years ago, Radio 47 is Kenya’s first Swahili audiovisual radio station and ranks second nationally in audience reach, according to Ipsos.
