Police in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, have arrested seven suspects and recovered several weapons and items stolen during the June 25 protests.
Among the recovered items are an AK-47 rifle, an anti-riot gun, and assorted police equipment. According to Kiambu County Police Commander Dorris Kemey, the firearms were among four that were stolen when protesters vandalised Dagoretti Police Station.
Kemey confirmed that while two weapons have been recovered, a search is still underway to retrieve the remaining firearms and ammunition believed to still be in the wrong hands.
Police say the arrested suspects are assisting with investigations as efforts to recover more stolen items continue.
This brings to 31 the number of suspects arrested in Kikuyu alone following the protests.
On Friday 24, suspects were nabbed after protesters torched public offices, including the Kikuyu Law Courts and Sub-County offices, and destroyed government vehicles.
The twenty-four individuals will remain in custody for 14 days, as police continue investigations into the violent incidents that rocked the town on Wednesday, June 25.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the protests turned violent when demonstrators torched the Kikuyu Law Courts, Kikuyu Sub-County offices, and several government vehicles, including tractors and tuk-tuks.
