Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced the closure of 35 health facilities found guilty of defrauding the Social Health Authority (SHA). Speaking at a public forum at the KCB Grounds in Kajiado, on Monday 30, June 2025 the CS issued a stern warning to other facilities engaging in malpractice, vowing that the government will not tolerate abuse of the healthcare system.
Duale cited fraudulent activities such as dual billing and false claims as some of the offences committed, which undermine the ongoing efforts to deliver Universal Health Coverage (UHC) to all Kenyans. He encouraged members of the public to report suspicious practices through the 24/7 SHA hotline number 147.
In a bid to improve awareness and uptake of Taifa Care under SHA, CS Duale pledged to ensure information about SHA benefits is communicated in simplified and local languages, saying no Kenyan should miss out on essential healthcare due to language or literacy barriers.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving UHC by ensuring equitable and affordable access to quality health services. He also highlighted ongoing initiatives under the National Equipment Service Program aimed at enhancing the capacity of public hospitals through the provision of modern medical equipment.
Duale lauded Kajiado County for enrolling 431,259 residents representing 39 percent of its population, into the SHA system. He urged more residents to register in order to fully realize the promise of UHC.
The event was attended by key health sector leaders including Kajiado Governor Hon. Joseph Ole Lenku, Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, SHA CEO Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, KMPDC CEO Dr. David Kariuki, and Acting CEO of the Digital Health Agency Mr. Anthony Lenaiyara. Their presence underscored the collective resolve to safeguard Kenya’s health reforms and deliver on the UHC agenda.
