The Ministry of Health has clarified the salary structure for medical interns following recent public debate over their remuneration.

In a statement, the Ministry said intern doctors will earn a basic monthly salary of Ksh 46,120, as outlined in their official posting letters. However, when allowances tied to their job group (CSG 9/JG ‘L’) are factored in, the total monthly pay rises to approximately Ksh 208,000.

The clarification comes a few days after the Ministry announced that the new cohort of interns will be posted from July, 2 2025.

“The Ministry of Health will post the next cohort of Medical interns with effect from 1st July  2025. To facilitate a smooth posting process, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) will conduct balloting for pre-intern graduates on Wednesday, 30th April 2025.” Read part of the statement.

The announcement came months of back-and-forth between KMPDC and the Ministry of Health over the delay in posting the interns.

The Ministry has deployed 6,484 interns for a year-long supervised clinical training in accredited hospitals.

The cohort includes 1,147 medical officers, 87 dentists, 500 pharmacists, 659 Bachelor of Science clinical officers, 1,993 diploma clinical officers and 2,098 Bachelor of Science nurses.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale described the posting as a significant milestone for the country’s healthcare system and urged eligible pre-interns to collect their posting letters to ease timely deployment.
