Former Chief Justice David Maraga has clarified that his participation in the June 25th Gen Z-led protest was not focused in his 2027 Presidency run whatsoever.

Maraga, who made headlines by joining young people alongside the Gen Z families in commemorating the departed souls, asserted that his actions were not politically motivated.

” I am not looking for votes or any political benefits, I believed in our young people and understood the fundamental of our democracy, the right to peacefully demonstrate.” Maraga said.

On the concern of whether he misbehaved by appearing in the street, the former CJ said that he cannot be remorseful as he was practicing his constitutional right under article 37, that accrues right for peaceful demonstration.

“I have a right also to express under a peaceful demonstration when I feel like something is not rightly done.” He added.

Maraga further asserted that he would have sympathized with Kenyans even if he could be Chief Justice at the moment, dismissing claims that he went to the street seeking for political credibility.

Maraga voiced concerns over excessive police force of maiming people, the erosion of public trust in leadership, and the need for mature , value-based governance, while applauding the youth for taking peaceful, well-organized stand and challenging the older generation to support them instead of dismissing their prolific efforts.

Meanwhile, Maraga has also talked on police reforms that have ever been an issue of concern, saying that the tax force was one of his retirement package. He also says, the first thing that was done was the assessment of the past reforms which was never implemented fully terming it as ‘lip service’ which has finally frustrated the police in the long run.
