More than 1,000 medical facilities have been shut down for engaging in fraudulent activities under the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme.

Speaking in London during a meeting with Kenyans living and working in the United Kingdom, President William Ruto has issued a firm warning to rogue healthcare providers, vowing that ongoing investigations will lead to even more closures.

“The criminal elements that are staining SHA will not succeed. We have tracked and closed over 1,000 medical facilities engaging in fraud. More are on the way,” the president said.

President Ruto defended SHA as a transformative programme, stating that it had served over 4.9 million Kenyans in just eight months, outperforming the now-defunct the National Hospital Insurance Fund, NHIF.

He emphasized that the integrity of SHA is crucial to the success of Kenya’s universal healthcare reforms and said the government remains committed to keeping the system efficient and corruption-free.

Last week the Ministry of Health said the health facilities that were shut down, were found to have submitted double claims in a coordinated scheme to defraud the public health insurer.
