Just a few hours after the passing on of Liverpool winger Diogo Jota was confirmed, Liverpool fans have turned out in large numbers outside Anfield to express their deep love and respect for the 28 year old Portuguese star.

According to the Police in Spain where the accident occurred, the Portuguese forward and his brother were killed when the Lamborghini they were in veered off a road and burst into flames.

Jota has been instrumental in the recent campaigns under both Jurgen Klop and Arne Slot with his versatility earning him more game time under Liverpool’s 2024/2025 premier league winning team.

Fans outside Anfield stadium were seen chanting his name with banners, and emotional tributes in a show of their appreciation.

Videos shared on social media captured the passionate scenes as fans waved flags and held up signs bearing Diogo’s name, with many describing him as “a true Red” and “one of our own.”

Some supporters could be seen wearing shirts with his image, while others chanted his name in unison.

Diogo, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, has won the hearts of the Anfield faithful with his determination, skill, and key goals in crucial matches.

The wave of mourning extended far beyond Anfield. Several football stars, clubs, and world leaders have continued to send their condolences, reflecting the global impact Diogo made both on and off the pitch.

“It doesn’t make sense. We were just together with the national team, you had just gotten married to your wife, I send my condolences. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you,” wrote Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo on social media.

FC Porto wrote in a statement: “We’re destroyed. We’re in shock”.

Rúben Neves: “They say you only lose people when you forget about them.I’ll never forget you.”

Meanwhile UEFA announced a moment of silence will be observed at all of today’s and tomorrow’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal and Liverpool star.

These are just some of the messages of support extended to Jota’s family as the football world continues to mourn the recently wedded star who just lost his life barely two weeks after tying the knot.
