Irate youth escorting the body of slain teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang have torched Mawego Police Post where the deceased was first detained.
Tension flared after angry students and youths set fire the Police Station during the arrival of the body of Ojwang at his Kokwanyo village, Homa Bay County.
The enraged crowd said Ojwang was taken into custody at the station after being picked from his home under unclear circumstances, blaming the police for his mysterious death.
According to eyewitnesses, the demonstrators, arrived at the station carrying Onjwang’s in a procession shortly before noon, chanting slogans and demanding justice.
Tensions escalated when some protesters breached the gates and began pelting the buildings with stones.
Moments later, parts of the station were engulfed in flames, with furniture and police files reportedly destroyed.
Police officers at the station were overwhelmed and forced to flee as the crowd overran the compound..
Albert Ojwang’s case has triggered a wave of anger across the region, with civil society groups and political leaders calling for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Ojwang was initially detained at Mawego Police Station in June 7, before being transferred to Nairobi.
He later died while in at Central Police Station, sparking public outrage.
Today’s incident follows nationwide protests in June 17 and 25 triggered by Ojwang’s death and continues a wave of unrest already testing the government’s relationship with youth and its handling of police accountability.
Protests are expected to intensify Monday as activists and youth groups across the country gear up for mass demonstrations tied to the anniversary of Saba Saba, a historic day for pro-democracy struggles in Kenya.
