National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has slammed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following his tour in the Western Region.

Speaking in Mombasa Saturday, 5 July 2025, Wetang’ula said during the campaigns towards the 2022 elections, he refused the Western leaders’ call to have President William Ruto appoint more from the region to government.

Wetang’ula said Gachagua claimed the Western part of the country did not give enough votes to President Ruto to warrant such favours.

“Mwaka juzi tulikuwa pale Bungoma na huyu ndugu yetu wa mitego na shares na Mrima, nikaambia Rais wetu William Ruto umetupatia hii na hii na hii, tuongezee ingine, tunataka kuwa kama Oliver Twist; thank you but give me some more, akasema wewe Papa wa Roma acha hiyo, nyinyi hamna shares za kutosha katika hii serikali, ile mmepata inatosha,” said Wetang’ula.

The Speaker criticised Gachagua, calling him a hypocrite, saying “jana nimemwona amerudi huko, amesahau ile alisema, anasema niliwatetea, ninataka muongezewe, unafiki mtupu!”

Wetang’ula clapped back at Gachagua following his famous sentiments towards ODM leader Raila Odinga — that he had put mitego to prevent him from going to State House for a handshake with President Ruto.

“Ni yule yule alisema aliweka mitego, mitego, mitego ili Raila akipita hapo imshike, kumbe alisahau mitego ni ya panya, humnasa waliokuwamo na wasiokuwamo, ukamnasa mwenyewe,” he added.

Wetang’ula said the country has made progress and all tribes have equal rights, adding that “hakuna kabila kubwa, hakuna kabila ndogo, sisi wote ni Wakenya.”

Gachagua was impeached by the National Assembly on 8 October 2024, on 11 separate charges.

On March 1, 2025 President Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga signed a memorandum of understanding, formalizing what has been termed as a “broad-based government”.

The pact between two detailed a framework for collaboration between the country’s two largest political parties.
