Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has sparked fresh controversy after threatening that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could soon be arrested over alleged links to the violence and looting that marred the June 25, 2025 protests.
Sudi’s remarks come as security agencies intensify a nationwide crackdown on individuals accused of orchestrating or participating in the destruction of property during the protests.
In a video shared on his official X account, Sudi claimed that Gachagua financed the chaos witnessed during the demonstrations.
“These are the ones who planned the demonstrations, and you were the financier of everything that happened. So stop claiming that it was all politically planned against you. That is not politics. After we are done with them, you are the one we will arrest,” Sudi warned.
His sentiments have added fuel to the ongoing political blame game, with both government and opposition figures accusing each other of sponsoring the goons who hijacked the initially peaceful Gen Z-led protests. Sudi insisted that Gachagua must face accountability, saying, “After them, it is you we are coming for.”
Sudi’s accusations come in the wake of the dramatic re-arrest of Gachagua’s ally, Peter Kinyanjui alias Kawanjiru, by anti-terror police outside Ruiru Law Courts shortly after he was freed on bond. Kinyanjui is reportedly being investigated over his alleged role in the violence that saw police stations set ablaze, businesses looted, and lives lost during the protests.
Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) earlier on dismissed reports that it was currently investigating or planning to summon Gachagua. However, the DCI clarified that should credible evidence emerge linking him to the violence, appropriate action will be taken as no one is above the law.
Meanwhile, Gachagua who maintained a low profile during the protests has denied any involvement in funding the violence. He has continued to criticize the government’s handling of the protests and joined opposition leaders in calling for accountability as the ‘cousins coalition’ intensify their presidential campaigns across the country.
As the Saba Saba protests draw closer, Sudi’s remarks have stirred fresh tension in a country already on edge despite security agencies calling on political leaders to exercise caution in their statements to avoid inflaming the situation further as the crackdown on suspected looters and masterminds of violence continues.
