President Paul Biya of Cameroon has officially declared his candidacy. Through a statement he posted on his social media accounts on Sunday 13 July, 2025, Biya declared he is running for an eighth consecutive term in Cameroon’s upcoming presidential election, scheduled for October 12, 2025.
At 92, Biya is currently Africa’s second-longest serving head of state and among the oldest leaders in the world. If re-elected, he would complete the next seven-year term at the age of 99.
“I am a candidate,” Biya declared.
Biya first came to power in 1982, and his reign has seen decades of tight political control, allegations of electoral irregularities, and calls for democratic reforms.
Cameroon continues to struggle with major internal challenges, including the ongoing Anglophone crisis in the northwest and southwest regions, a struggling economy, and rising youth unemployment.
