Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has refuted claims that there is a special police unit that has been formed specifically to ”kill” peeople.

Speaking during the state of security address, Murkomen said all the police units in Kenya are there to protect citizens not to harm them.

”There is no police squad that is involved in Killing people, at least not in this administration or that the cabinet secretary is aware of,” Murkomen said adding that ”it will be unconstitutional and illegal to establish a squad in Kenya to kill people.”

The Interior CS assured Kenyans that all excesses by police officers, especially during the June 15 and 17 protests, will be investigated and that all officers involved will be brought to book.

Murkomen termed as propaganda claims that some police officers in civilian clothes and unmarked cars rained terror on protesters under a clear command ,”there is no rule that excuses a police officer that if you are not in uniform you can commit crimes of kill people,” he said.

Murkomen’s clarification comes amid media reports alleging the existence of a special police unit deployed in areas such as Kangemi, Kitengela, and Kajiado, accused of shooting indiscriminately during protests, resulting in deaths and injuries.

The opposition on the other hand has also claimed there is a special ”killer police unit” that has been going around killing Kenyans especially during protests.

Let by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua the leaders claim that the squad consists of highly trained individuals, an order that was seconded by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) headed by Noordin Haji.

Gachagua even linked the squad to the unexplained death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang’, alleging that there are many Kenyans who have met their untimely deaths at the hands of the squad, and the cases have been expertly covered up.
