Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called out former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, demanding that he face the country and answer for serious human rights violations before attempting any political comeback.
In a strongly worded statement, Senator Cherargei said Matiang’i must be held accountable for a dark chapter in Kenya’s history , one that marked by extra-judicial killings, enforced disappearances, and widespread political persecution.
“Before Matiang’i even thinks of running for any political seat even as chairman of a cattle dip in Nyamira he must first answer to widows, orphans, and families who lost their loved ones during his reign of terror,” said the Senator.
During Matiang’i’s tenure as Interior CS, bodies were discovered in River Yala, forests in Tsavo, mass graves in Garissa, and in containers all pointing to a grim pattern of state-linked executions. Human rights groups and victims’ families continue to demand justice, with little progress made.
Senator Cherargei further accused Matiang’i of orchestrating a direct assault on press freedom during the controversial digital migration, where media stations were forcibly switched off a move he says violated the Constitution.
“He shut down media stations, harassed journalists, and used state power to silence dissent. That’s not leadership that’s dictatorship,” he said.
The Senator warned that Kenyans will not tolerate any attempt by Matiang’i to rebrand himself without first addressing his legacy of brutality and impunity.
