The National Police Service has confirmed that the firearm used in the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were has been linked to a notorious criminal gang operating in Nairobi.

Investigations have led to the arrest of ten suspects, some of whom are believed to be members of the “Mjahidini” gang. Speaking to the press Thursday May, 8 Inspector General Douglas Kanja said a ballistic report revealed that the recovered Sarsilmaz pistol used in the killing was also involved in three separate robbery cases in Nairobi and Kiambu.

Kanja continued ”This critical piece of evidence not only identifies the weapon used in this heinous act but also reveals its involvement in a series of other criminal activities. Specifically, the same firearm has been implicated in three separate robbery incidents across Nairobi and Kiambu Counties, with the most recent crime occurring on April 26, 2025.”

Kanja stated that the probe remains active and pledged the continued pursuit of all involved, ”This progress demonstrates the NPS’s commitment to resolving this case with the highest standards of professionalism and diligence. We will continue to pursue all leads, analyse forensic evidence, and ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.” he stated.

The IG has also assured the public of maximum security during the burial ceremony of the late Ong’ondo Were, scheduled for Friday, saying proper arrangements have been made to ensure peace and order are maintained throughout the event.

“Proper arrangements have been put in place to ensure peace prevails tomorrow during Hon. Ong’ondo Were’s burial ceremony. We expect everything to proceed smoothly,” said IG Kanja.

The MP was fatally shot on April 30, 2025, while in his vehicle near the City Mortuary roundabout. A motorcycle carrying two men approached his car at a traffic light, and one opened fire before fleeing the scene. Were was rushed to Nairobi Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police are urging the public to provide any further information via toll-free numbers.
